Cortijo Cornelio is an old farm, situated in the municipality of Colmenar, in the heart of the Montes de Málaga, in the area known as the Axarquia - "the place where the sun rises". Cornelio has been an important Cortijo in the area since before the 15th century, both economically and socially, housing several wine presses and a large olive press on a finca of some 45 hectares.
The Cortijo is situated at 700 metres and consists of a large variety of olive and almond trees. Many of Cornelio´s (10000) olive trees are very ancient - "older than the oldest cathedral in Spain". For the last 11 years Cortijo Cornelio has been fully certified as an organic farm (CAAE)
As part of the rehabilitation of the farm and its local economy, Cortijo Cornelio has been completely restored with the addition of a small scale production facility, integrated into its ancient buildings, for the elaboration of organic herbs and dried fruits.
The farm is privately owned and managed without state assistance. The owners of Cortijo Cornelio are dedicated to sustainable, organic agriculture, sustainable rural economics and the principles of human rights, solidarity and fairtrade for all. This philosophy has given rise to several practical initiatives to encourage and help in the production and distribution of organic food in Andalucia. These initatives include EcoTrade, Biobox and BioShop together with a cooperative of over 75 other organic farmers and producers.
Cortijo Cornelio, the farm, has production facilities for the drying, packing and distribution of wild and cultivated herbs, and dried fruits, also certified as organic by CAAE. It is also the administrative headquarters of the company's EcoTrade, Biobox, Organic Gourmet, Cornelio Organic Herbs and Spices, Bio-TRACK operations.
